Bag Statement

There is a great joy in experimenting with textile and found objects. These all contribute to the artistic expression in each individual textile / assemblage bag I produce. As I work with the found remnants and objects, each bag takes on its own personality. Other specialty contemporary fabrics are added to create the overall design, as well as industrial objects. These include carbinas and seatbelts which make up the constant element on each piece. After assembling the bag model, the detail work begins. Found objects and fabrics are sought out that will reflect the theme of each bag, and in custom pieces for clients. I incorporate details that reflect their identity. My intent is to produce a bag that goes beyond just being a bag, it is to create a unique, and wearable work of art.

Artist Profile

Australian Artist Kristin Tennyson established the Tennyson Tote label in 2005 to produce one of a kind wearable art pieces that reflected her environment for a Nature/Culture exhibition. Since then Kristin has continued to expand her wearable art range and exhibit her work in Australia and Canada.

The newest addition to the Tennyson Tote label is a product range of identity bags. The identity bags are custom orders. The bags are designed specifically to a clients characteristics and individuality. A solo exhibition of her work will be held in November 2006, and photos will be on the website soon thereafter.

Artist Statement

Living and working in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, I am an artist that combines textile, assemblage, digital media and painting. I have always used these mediums to create works that are interesting and may cause comment. Other than just producing wearable art, I work consistently on mixed media painting and sculptures. Currently I am developing a series on “identity” and how we relate to our current environment. I have produced several “identity” bags, that are made up of fabrics and objects that reflect the identity of the subject. I am also developing large, textile sculptures and paintings that combine found fabrics and objects that are layered that reflect a theme in which I am exploring. While I always begin with an image of what I would like the finished work to be, the properties of the mediums I use typically guide me towards something different.
